1) ‘Illuminated Manuscripts to Modern Calligraphy’

2) ‘Walk with me along The South West Coast Path’

James has recently been invited to give talks to a number of groups including WI, Rotary Club and calligraphy groups - which have been well received.

James is available to give these talks between the months of September and April.

Fee on application plus travel: contact James.

TALK (1) will include:

  • Quality slides showing:
    1. a brief history of calligraphy
    2. work by contemporary scribes
    3. examples of work completed by beginners/improvers who have attended a workshop led by James
    4. how calligraphy is used today.
  • Demonstration: using a pen/piece of chalk on a large blackboard – the group will be able to see how letters from a variety of scripts are constructed.
  • Display: the group will be able to look at examples of the speaker’s work and that of work completed by his students – beginners/improvers.
  • Artefacts: a facsimile of The Book Of Kells will be available for members to enjoy.
  • Laptop Computer: members will have the opportunity to use a CD-Rom of the famous Lindisfarne Gospels which will allow the pages to be turned over, simply by using the computer mouse.
  • Calligraphy: each member will return home with a small piece of calligraphy.

TALK (2) will include:

  • Quality slides showing various sections of Britain’s longest footpath. General background information will be given on the historical development of the path including references to: the role of the coastguards, smuggling, shipwrecks and the significance of the lighthouses.
  • Display
    a) of the calligraphic map of The South West Coast Path completed by the speaker.
    b) of literature about The South West Coast Path which members can take home to help them plan a visit to this most attractive part of Britain.
  • Laptop Computer: members of the audience will have the opportunity to use a CD-Rom showing the attractions and delights of The South West Coast Path.
  • Readings/Anecdotes: members will enjoy listening to amusing readings and interesting anecdotes.
