‘ If I had a teacher at school like James, it would have been great and I would have learnt a lot more in all subjects ’. Comment by student attending a weekend workshop at University of Warwick

Aim: Not everyone has regular access to a tutor of calligraphy to find out how their work is progressing. I hope that this service will go some way to filling this gap.

Method: I will look at your work with great care and attention and will comment on areas that need correcting and working on. I will also highlight aspects of work which are sound and successful. In addition to written notes, I will scribe letters/words with additional annotation. Instruction sheets will be sent to help with further work.

AREAS OF CALLIGRAPHY TO BE LOOKED AT:

  • Individual letters, quality of serifs, pen angle,
  • Proportion and form of letters,
  • Consistency within family letter groups,
  • Inter letter and inter word spacing,
  • General design and layout of project – including margins, if applicable.

ALPHABETS AVAILABLE FOR APPRAISAL:

  • Carolingian
  • Foundational
  • Gothic
  • Half Uncial
  • Italic – formal
  • Roman Capitals
  • Uncial with angled pen
  • Versals

If you wish to send work to me, then please follow the advice given below:

  • It would be useful (but not essential) for you to have access to a photocopier for making experimental paste ups of layouts.
  • Always date each sheet and if you complete more than one sheet in a day, number them as well.
  • For ‘roughs’ - work on good quality layout paper, A3 in size. Use a better quality paper such as cartridge or ‘HOT press’ smooth watercolour paper for final trials or finished work.
  • Send your work folded once, in a cardboard backed A4 size envelope with your name and address on the back. To ensure that the work is not mixed with someone else, please write your name in BLOCK CAPITALS on the back of each sheet of work. (If you do not want to fold your work, use an A3 cardboard backed envelope).
  • To save on postage – only send work that you need me to see – be selective.
  • Please enclose a stamped addressed postcard/envelope which I will use to inform you that I have received your work.
  • DON’T FORGET TO INCLUDE STAMPS TO COVER THE COST OF RETURNING YOUR WORK.
  • If you wish to write a personal letter/notes to me or send a cassette tape of questions or comments – they will be answered personally.
  • I will need to charge you for my time – which will be at the rate of £20 per hour. I will only charge you for the time spent looking at your work. For example 15 minutes - £5, 45 minutes - £15 etc. When I return your work - I will send you an invoice indicating the time spent on looking at your work and the fee due.
  • If you need to telephone me, it would be appreciated if calls could be made from 07.30 – 18.30. Please however avoid: 09.30 – 10.30, 13.00 – 14.00 and 16.00 – 16.45.
  • My aim is to return your work within 7 days of receiving it. This time scale is subject to my teaching commitments. If there is going to be a delay in returning your work, I will contact you. I will therefore need a contact telephone number.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
It must be understood that any work sent to me is at the owner’s risk, both in transit and when in my possession. Although I will take great care of your work, no liability for damage will be accepted.
