James taught in primary schools both in Surrey and Gloucestershire for seventeen years. He became interested in calligraphy in the mid 1980's and in 1991 completed a one year professional course in the subject at The Roehampton Institute, London and was awarded the Certificate in Calligraphy and Bookbinding. During his time at college James produced amongst other pieces, a calligraphic map of The South West Coast Path - Britain's Longest Footpath. This map which was written entirely by hand complemented by fine pen and ink drawings illustrates many of the sights to be found. It was featured in the highly prestigious magazine "The Scribe" published by the Society of Scribes and Illuminators. To date, James has sold over six hundred copies of the map to people in the UK and around the world.

In 1998 James became an accredited tutor for CLAS –The Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society. You can therefore expect a high standard of tuition.

James teaches calligraphy/crafts to adults at a number of centres in England and Wales and is well known for his enthusiasm, busy classes and his work with less experienced students - people requiring patience and understanding.
